BATON ROUGE, La., Oct. 14 - Polar Bears International (PBI) will begin Webcasts at www.polarbearsinternational.org of the famed polar bear migration from land to sea ice in the Hudson Bay near Churchill, Manitoba, on October 15, 2002 and continuing through November 15. The project is a joint venture with the wildlife Web caster, AfriCam, and eco-tour provider, Frontiers North Adventures.
There is no charge for viewing on the PBI Web site, where images will be refreshed every 15 seconds. However, for those who would like access to a continuous live video streamer over the entire four weeks, there is a $20 registration fee. This option may be of special interest to zoos, animal parks, educational facilities, and wildlife or environmental organizations.
According to Robert Buchanan, president of Polar Bears International, ‘As someone who has spent a month nearly every year for 15 years viewing polar bears from a Tundra Buggy, I can say that for PBI to be able to bring this magnificent sight to viewers worldwide is especially fulfilling. Our mission is to help conserve polar bears and their habitat through education. Nothing can educate people more than to see these noble creatures in action in their natural surroundings. The Polar Bear Cam is the next best thing to being in Churchill.’
Using special night vision equipment and floodlights, the cameras will be manned from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Central Time at one of the polar bears’ favorite gathering areas, Gordon Point. The area along Hudson Bay is home to the largest population of polar bears south of the Arctic Circle. These polar bears survive by hunting seals from the sea ice in Hudson Bay. As the ice breaks up each spring, they move to land where they begin a multi-month fast until the ice forms once again in late fall. As they gather and wait for the ice at the edge of the Bay, hundreds of visitors, by way of specially-outfitted tundra vehicles, have the rare privilege of viewing the males in mock battles and mothers with their cubs.
