Since Polar Bears International's (PBI's) inception, Frontiers North has supported their polar bear 'conservation through education' efforts. Frontiers North is a Platinum PBI sponsor and every year, we provide one-year PBI memberships to our Frontiers North guests participating on one of our Tundra Buggy Adventures. This award recognizes Frontiers North's contribution to the PBI's Adventure Learning program.
The Adventure Learning program exposes young students all over the world to polar bears in their natural environment, providing them with an understanding of the culture and geography of the North through two main components:
Videoconference Classroom
Polar bear researchers communicate live from the tundra near Churchill via the web in videoconferences with students attending zoos in Canada, United States and Australia.
Polar Bear Science Leadership Camp
A small number of top students from countries all over the world, including Canada, Germany, Australia and United States, gain hands-on experience working with polar bear researchers on the tundra near Churchill.
These programs directly involve students in scientific research, providing them opportunity to experience field work while learning about issues facing polar bears. These students then communicate what they've learned to other students throughout the world via online journals, articles, presentations, and webcasts.
The core concept of PBI's Adventure Learning program is to engage students in learning by doing. PBI involves young people in hands-on projects with top research scientists; Canada's subarctic region is the classroom.
One of PBI's main objectives with the program is to show how we are all interconnected with the health of the arctic ecosystem as well to show how we are all interconnected to the symbol of the arctic - the polar bear. Another objective is to increase scientific, cultural, and geographic literacy among young people and to encourage them to provide a leadership role in the education of others on the importance of the north. PBI strongly believes that the best teachers of kids are kids.
