When volunteers of the Children’s Wish Foundation met with Sophie she was 4 years old and wanted to go to Disney World. However at the time her health would not allow her to make such a trip and her mother knew she was a little scared of mascots.
A few years later Sophie, now aged 10, was leafing through an illustrated book on polar bears living in the area of Churchill, Manitoba. This was when she figured out what would be her greatest wish. Her mother informed the volunteers of Sophie’s love for polar bears and the magic began.
After searching the Internet, The Foundation discovered a magical place called the Tundra Buggy Adventure in Manitoba where one can observe polar bears in their natural habitat. The arrangements began but, surprise, Sophie’s mother was pregnant.
After waiting for five years the big day finally came and last October Sophie and her family began their long journey. After stops in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Thompson they arrived in Churchill.
The group of tourists included people from Germany, America and Japan all of whom were very appreciative of our mission. A specialist physician from New York City even took the time to send us an email to express how wonderful Sophie and her family made his trip.
Sophie came back to Qu bec with her arms full of gifts and her head filled with pictures of mama and papa bears hugging and cubs being fed by their mothers. She made such an extraordinary trip that all the staff of the Qu bec East office now dream of going to Manitoba someday.
Louise Trottier, one of our dedicated volunteers accompanied the family since they did not speak English. Thank you Louise for always being available for our children!
